Janne Nisonen is one of Finland’s most versatile and sought-after musicians. His career has taken him from violin student to chamber musician, from concertmaster to conductor. Today, Nisonen is particularly known as an elegant interpreter of classical and early Romantic music, as well as a bold advocate for new music. His concerts are infused with a certain vitality and ruggedness, rooted in his family’s heritage from Kaustinen—a lineage that includes fiddle players for generations.
Highlights of the 2025–2026 season include his conducting debuts with Sinfonia Lahti and Tampere Philharmonic, as well as a recording project with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Nisonen also returned to lead the Pori Sinfonietta, where he served as Chief Conductor from 2016 to 2018.
Nisonen has recorded all eight of Ferdinand Ries’s symphonies with the Tapiola Sinfonietta (Ondine). The recordings have received glowing reviews both in Finland and abroad, with particular praise for his “exceptional precision, lively articulation, rhythmic effectiveness, and buoyant lightness” (Helsingin Sanomat, 2024).
Janne Nisonen embraces new projects without regard for genre boundaries: collaborations with the Frigg and Sväng ensembles have brought many new listeners to orchestral music. Creating diverse and surprising concert programs is an important part of his artistic work. From 2021 to 2025, he was responsible for the artistic planning of the Tapiola Sinfonietta, alongside flutist Hanna Juutilainen and intendant Maati Rehor.
Janne Nisonen has conducted several prominent orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki City Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra Avanti!, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia, and Kuopio City Orchestra.
Particularly important orchestras and collaborators for Janne Nisonen have been the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and Tapiola Sinfonietta, where he has served as the 1st Concertmaster since 2007. Significant musical mentors for Nisonen include violinist Endre Wolf, pianist Timo Koskinen, chamber music professor Mats Zetterqvist, and conductor Hannu Lintu.
